The Full Story
Since I was a little girl I always knew web design and development were my passions. At 8, I had already built my first site using only CSS & HTML. I remember my mother prying me away from the computer at night to send me to bed because if I could have it my way, I would sleep in the office chair with my head resting on the keyboard. At that time I never understood or knew why I loved web designing so much. I just knew I loved being on the computer and giving things a purpose.
It wasn’t until High School that I started developing my skills and taking them seriously. My mother always said if you aren’t going to give something 110% then not do it at all. Stepping into my first computer class and realizing I am the only POC or even sometimes a woman, I finally understood what she meant. At that point, I knew the challenges I would face to get to my dream and I wasn’t going to let anything stand in my way. I was going to have to be all in.
After graduating with the highest grade in most of those advanced courses, I decided to continue my education at a university. My eyes were set on computer science but after the first week, I learned that was not the path for me. I knew eventually I wanted to start my own business, so I followed my heart and chose a major where I could gain business and web design skills. Throughout my 4 years, I was able to work with companies and people looking to start their businesses after college. In 2019, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in Information Systems and 2 years of web design experience.
Shortly after, I accepted a position as a Software QA Analyst and put my dreams of web designing on hold. Even though I knew I wanted to get back into it eventually, I was looking to grow my skills in a new career. I honestly believe reality set in and I realized that these big dreams were just dreams if there wasn't any action involved. Every time I would open my laptop to get started on turning my vision into a reality, it would feel so overwhelming because there was so much that needed to be done. So I closed my laptop and put my dreams on hold.
Two years later, web designing found me again. During my time at the university, I met this amazing woman who has now started her own business, TimelyTay. Designing her site from start to finish brought the passion I once had so long ago back. After that significant accomplishment, I knew this was where I am supposed to be.
Attending events and joining freelance sites helped me gain new clients and meet people working to have their sites redone. When I ask them, "why now?" if they are looking for a complete web redesign, it's because existing companies are not understanding their needs and wants which makes the process difficult and stressful. I knew that I could make an impact on this industry because my main purpose is to work directly with my client to help bring their vision to life.
